Passion… When we think of this term, happiness is probably the first thing that comes to mind. “Something that makes me happy.” “Something that I am excited about when I wake up in the mornings.” “Something that arouses enthusiasm.”
Nothing is wrong with the above statements, but what if I told you otherwise… What if I were to flip the script and tell you that passion doesn’t mean happiness, but suffering? So your passion isn’t something that you’re necessarily happy to do, but something you’re willing to suffer for.
Wow. That’s what I said.
I came to this realization while watching Joanna Waterfall interview Saren Stiegel for the Yellow Collective. When Saren said this, I immediately look to my source – the Word (of God, of course) and I saw this. This is the only time passion is mentioned in the KJV of the Holy Bible:
Acts 1:3 King James Version (KJV)
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
Now in other versions, including the ESV Strong’s, passion is translated in the Greek to pascho or pathos mean suffering.
The text is talking about Jesus and His promise of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was passionate about US! He suffered for us! *inserts shout*
So think about the next time you talk about passion.
- First of all, your passion shouldn’t be all about you, FYI.
- Second, your passion won’t always be a happy journey. Take Jesus as an example. He was lowly, commonly, homeless, crucified & sacrificed. That doesn’t sound like peaches & cream & cake walks.
- Third, your passion should be something that you’re willing to suffer for. Example, Christianity & ministry. Are you just happy doing the will of the Father? Or are you willing to suffer for the cause of Christ?
These takeaways remind me of a sermon I heard just this past Sunday from Tim Davis on holding on (Philippians 2:16). He posed the question: Are you holding on? Or are you hanging around? Holding on requires effort, passion & suffering sometimes. Hanging around requires no effort, is measured by your comfort and mere happiness. Once your unhappy, you bail.
So PASSION – the unedited truth; Are you willing to suffer for the thing you’re striving for? Are you willing to hold on no matter the cost?
